Hiking

If hiking is your pleasure, the Florence/Mapleton area will delight you. mountains, seacoast, estuaries, rivers, streams and lakes provide the setting for some stupendous hiking opportunity. Over 40 established trails are waiting for you with historic hiking trails like “Stagecoach Trail” or “Chief Siltcoos Trail” or meander through saltwater estuaries or freshwater lagoons or walk the boardwalk on “Lagoon Trail”.

 

Some of the hiking opportunities are listed here:

  • Carter Dunes Trail Access (Taylor Dunes) This 1.5 mile trail leads through abundant wildlife to the beach.
  • Chief Tsiltcoos Trail 7 miles south of Florence Access from trailhead at Siltcoos Beach Road 1.25 miles long Winds through coastal evergreen forest of huckleberry & rhododendron.
  • Mapleton Hill Pioneer Trail Once known as the North Fork Trail, this trail offers a colorful history, making it eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Interpretive signs along the 3500-foot easy to moderate hike. One mile east of Florence on Hwy 126 to North Fork Road (5070), then 14.3 miles northeast and make a right turn at Minerva.
  • Overlook Beach Trail Ten miles south of Florence on west side of Hwy 101 One mile trail to beach.
  • Pawn Old Growth Trail One mile east of Florence on Hwy 126 to North Fork Road, then 17 miles. Keep right and cross bridge. Easy, 4,000-foot loop trail set in 10 acres of old growth forest. Great for families.
  • Taylor Dunes Trail Trailhead at Carter Lake Campground turnoff, west side of Hwy 101 7.5 miles south of Florence 1/2 mile trail to great views of dunes & ocean
  • Threemile Lake Trail Located 14 miles south of Florence on the west side of the highway, this very scenic trail is about a seven mile round trip and considered of "Medium" difficulty. Hike across dunes for a good summer swim.
  • Tahkenitch Creek Loop Access at overlook viewing area as above. 2.5 miles long. High elevation vistas.
  • Tahkenitch Creek TrailAccess on west side of Hwy 101 11 miles south of Florence 3 separate loops of 1.5, 2.5 & 4 miles Through dunes, forests, marshes, meadows, creek & wildlife
  • Siltcoos Lake Trail Five miles south of Florence on the east side of the highway, this trail is of "Medium" difficulty. It's a 4.5 mile loop, with two stops at the lake for picnicking and swimming.
  • Sutton Creek Trail Three miles north of Florence on the west side of the highway, there are at least 5 miles of different type of trails in this section. It is considered beginner to medium difficulty.
  • Waxmyrtle Trail - 7 miles south of Florence. Access from trailhead at Siltcoos Beach Road. 1.5 miles long of ocean & estuary views.
